The 2011 Lightning Master & World Championships will be hosted by CBVM (Brazilian Sailing Confederation), FEVERJ (Rio de Janeiro Sailing Federation), ABCLI (Brazilian Lightning Class Association) and the support from ICAB - Iate Clube Armação de Búzios and Búzios City.

The city of Búzios is famous for the overall mixture of tourism, sailing conditions and sailing events. Búzios is just 105 miles from Rio de Janeiro, a pleasant 2-hour trip takes you to the peninsula of Búzios, where more than 20 magnificent beaches and crystal-clear water contrast with the exuberantly sculptured landscape and exotic vegetation, with a wonderful year-round summer.

Consistent Northeastern winds throughout the year, sunshine and waves make this location perfect for racing in a Lightning.

In July there are winds of 4 to 10 knots during the racing period, from12:00 to 17:00. Stronger winds are seen earlier in the morning and at night. Water temperature varies from 18 degrees Celsius to 21 degrees Celsius in June requiring water proof spray tops and neoprene pants.

Búzios is
known for its year round sunshine and every day winds.
The races course area is located in front of the club with fairly calm waters, about 15 to 30 meters deep. This open basin presents a small tide of less than a meter and a very light current. Sailors will reach racing areas with a 5 minutes sail.

There are three courses that can be used, all within sight of one another. The prevailing winds during July are northeastern ranging from 8 to 20 knots.

A short up-wind sail to the race area and again a short up-wind sail back in the afternoon will be all that is needed.

Elected by ISAF for the 2009 ISAF Youth World Championship and the 2009 420 World Championships, Búzios is considered
one of the best sailing locations in the world.

ICAB - Iate Clube da Armação de Búzios is a private club whose primary objective is to support sailing activities. It was host to the 1988 IYRU World Women’s Sailing Championship and also to the 1991 World Europe Dinghy Class Championship. Several Star and Laser Class South American and Brazilian National Championships have been held at ICAB. In 2004 the club hosted the Brazilian Laser Nationals with 183 sailors. Since 1988, ICAB annually hosts a Búzios Sailing Week for ocean classes, with about 60 boats.

The club is situated on a small promontory between the Bardot water front and the Ossos Beach the club enjoys a privileged position overlooking the racing area. From the center of the city, one can reach the club walking 500 meters along the Bardot water front. The northern side of the Búzios cape and the continent form a small gulf enclosed by a few islands.
